Your Wounds increase when failing a high level Dangerous storylet or Opportunity Card. You may also happen to make a choice which is successful, but hurts anyway (perhaps unexpectedly). There are also concoctions and items that will give you some benefit, but exact a price on your person. Be careful.
What happens if my Wounds get too high?!?
Fortunately, Wounds is a quality that is relatively easy to reduce—it just takes time. The following storylet will appear in your Lodgings that gives you a good chance to reduce your Wounds.

If your Wounds reaches 8, you will end up in A slow boat passing a dark beach on a silent river. When you do this you will also lose any Opportunity Cards you have in your slots. While in exile, you can reduce your Wounds over time and other opportunities may arise.

- Drinking F.F. Gebrandt's Tincture of Vigour: It will cost 1 action point to use. Click the item in your inventory (proper usage is one-half bottle per dose, but can be used all at once for greater effect and an increase to Nightmares).
- Consuming Dark-Dewed Cherries. Click the item in your inventory.
- Getting a Horsehead Amulet: This goes in your Weapons slot (Wounds -2)
Opportunity Cards
- Playing A Hearty Meal opportunity card
- Meeting the Repentant Forger is New Newgate Prision will reduce your Wounds.
Storylets
- A social action in your lodgings allows a friend to help you back to health (or poison you).
- Beginning a Zee Voyage will reduce your Wounds by 1 change point.
- Help bring in peach brandy (unlocked in Spite with shadowy 50 and Connected: The Orient 5) has the option 'Sneak a sip of the brandy'. Success will decrease Wounds by several points; failing will decrease Wounds by one point, but will also decrease Connected: The Orient and increase Suspicion by one point.
