The Alleys of Spite
Spite is a low and vicious neighbourhood. Learn the ways of the shadows to survive and prosper.
Follow an unsuspecting mark
For practice and entertainment value only.
Eavesdrop on a random target
Secrets are valuable in Fallen London. If you can get close enough to overhear, you may benefit accordingly.
[Unlocked with Shadowy 2]
The Pickpocket's Promenade!
Melt into the crowd to separate victims from their valuables. This will empty your Opportunities hand and take you elsewhere.
[Unlocked with Shadowy 10]
[This storylet will not cost you an action!]An evening's dipping
Don your most inconspicuous clothing. Prepare your sleights and distractions. Where will you go to pick pockets? Shorter routes are safer, but make it harder to get big pay-offs.
The Tenterhooks
Here the dyers make their lairs, with their webs of cloth and their tangled lines. Escape is tricky, but pursuit trickier. A shorter route.
[This storylet will cost you 2 actions!]Smashtile Alley
Here the kiln-tenders bake brick, to feed the endless appetite for roof-tiles. One of the many perils of the Neath: stalactites that fall like god-fluing stones, to crack a roofs open like snail-shells. A medium-length route.
[This storylet will cost you 2 actions!]Blythenhale
The cats of Blythenhale are notorious. Here, the cat-chasers often find themselves the cat-chased. A longer route.
[This storylet will cost you 2 actions!]Veilgarden
Forgo the sullied alleys of Spite for the brighter lights of Veilgarden. A higher-reward endeavour for very Shadowy types… but pickpocketing in Veilgarden isn't available yet.

[Unlocked with Impossible! 1]
The Cats of Spite
Fallen Londoners pursue cats avidly. Why?
[Unlocked with Shadowy 5]
[This storylet will not cost you an action!]Cat-catching!
If you catch the right one, it'll tell you a secret. But it's bad luck to hurt them. And it's damnably hard to sneak up on a cat.
Catch a tabby cat in the alleys of Spite
They say all cats are grey in the dark. But tabbies are the most talkative and least useful.
Catch a ginger tom on the rooftops
Ginger toms are the most arrogant of their kind. They like to stalk the rooftops and pretend the city belongs to them. The good news is, you can sneak up on them while they're preening. The bad news is, you need to do it on the rooftops. Don't look down.
Catch a white cat: Softly now…
White cats tend to be deaf, which might be why they're so watchful.
Catch a grey cat in the nave of the church of All Christs
Doves, bats and grey cats are the only animals permitted in Fallen London's churches, although rats have been known to ignore the prohibitions. Grey cats are even-tempered - you're unlikely to be scratched - but very watchful.
Catch a black cat
You didn't know cats came in this particular black. It's as if someone's cut a hole in a shadow and filled it with ink.
[This storylet costs 2 actions]Courier's work
You've learnt your way around the alleys of Spite. Can you use your knowledge for gain?
[Unlocked with Shadowy 5]
[This storylet will not cost you an action!]A courier job
The costermongers of Spite sell chestnut-mushrooms, blind cave herring, smoked bat… and secrets. The Steely-Eyed Costermonger needs you to take a secret to a colleague five streets away. Time is of the essence.
Take a long safe unobserved route.
You'll probably get there on time. But you won't earn a bonus.
Attempt a short cut through a more dangerous area
You might earn the bonus, but there's a significant chance you'll get lost. And a tiny chance you'll get eaten.
Take a message to the river
The Costermonger has no message-pouch for you today. Instead, you are to make your best speed to Soakwood Bridge, and whisper certain words to the water under the northernmost arch… This has an unusual, and much greater, reward.

Perhaps you've learnt enough to play the other side…
[Unlocked with Shadowy 6]
[This storylet will not cost you an action!]Snaffle couriered messages
"Someone - never you mind who - is sending a courier across town with a juicy pouch of messages. You've run the courier routes, haven't you? Find the courier, lift their pouch and you'll be well paid for it."
Brush past her in the crowd. Lift the pouch.
Busy tonight. That'll help.
Brush past her in the crowd. Exchange the pouch for another full of fake secrets.
Trickier. But it might be worth a bonus from your employers.
But what is this?
One of the messages in the pouch stands out. It's encoded. What's more, it's addressed to one of your friends on the Surface. This will invite someone who isn't playing to join you, and start them on a short, lucrative story.

Rob a drunk
Fall asleep in the gutter around here? He needs educating. You're doing him a favour! But who is he, when he's not snoring in three inches of street-slurry?
[Unlocked with Shadowy 10]
An anonymous wretch
Once he might have been anyone. Now he's no-one.
A cavalry officer
That's the uniform of the 23rd Neathy Rifles. Though he's long since sold his brass buttons - for the cheapest gin, by the smell.
[Unlocked when The Airs of London is:]
A furious and incoherent drunken rat
She lies on her furry back in a litter of vegetable-peelings, screaming ratty imprecations at the uncaring ceiling. Pick a rat's pockets? Now there's a challenge.
[Unlocked with Someone is Coming 3]
A spirifer?
Spirifers take and trade souls: they are the allies and, occasionally, the rivals of Hell. This one is slumped in a spreading pool of filth beneath a gas-lamp, the fork of his calling in his hand.
