In discussion with Failbetter, we've been asked to specifically omit certain content from the wiki. This is the usual Fate locked stuff, but also some things they have coming up. I've started a page and linked it in the header. Wiki-restricted content

Currently, the plan is to give us advance notice when content is coming that they want to remain unspoiled. We will then update this page and treat that stuff the same way we do Fate-locked content now.

If anyone wants more information, or if this is unclear, I'll do my best to clarify.

I've been trying to go through and clean up wiki pages, but I'm a little bit stymied by inconsistencies in formatting. (Doesn't help that I keep changing my mind about what looks best…) I'm wondering if a discussion here would help and then we can push all pages towards one 'standard'.

Looking at Ladybones for example, there's both single-quoted and double-quoted storylets. (I kind of like the double >> indent more but it looks like there's more of the single > indent on random pages I look at.)

Also- some pages have blue text to indicate missing choices, some have "Reward Spoiler (unknown)". (Personally, blue text was confusing to me for the first week looking at stuff here — I think it's only mentioned explicitly on Code Snippets — I was assuming it had something to do with fate-locked stuff since a lot of the fate-locked pages were blue. Just putting "unknown" is cleaner from my perspective.)

Lastly - spoiler policy. (Incidentally, that page is so much clearer now, thanks to Mr. Teem. Good work there.) One question though - is posting the text that you get after choosing a branch okay to post, as long as you keep it under 250 chars? I've been working under the assumption that it is NOT allowed/encouraged, and been editing that out as I go (though most pages do have it, which is why I'm uncertain how far to go. Just legacy left over from a less restrictive time?). (See New Newgate Actions spoiler boxes for an example of what I'm talking about here.)

(If/Once a standard is agreed on, I'm planning to wrangle the How To Edit Pages into something more useful/specific to this particular wiki, and probably add another intro page or two.) Thanks!

Heya

New to the wiki here (though not altogether inexperienced with wikiing lovecraftian text-based online rpgs). :)

I'm wondering if there's an overview list of all "Qualities", or if it would be useful to create such a page? I see the menu at the top which lists major things like Shadowy, but there's a lot of story-related stuff that would be neat to wiki (can we post story-related qualities like Preparing for a Daring Escape?).

(I'm surprised there isn't an overview page "Qualities" itself. That might make it less confusing for newcomers perhaps.)

Thanks!

EDIT: Hm, I now see that maybe I was looking for the Minor Qualities page or Storylets? Though a lot of these are missing. Is there a rhyme or reason why some of these are their own page and some are links to areas? (And if, say, I were to start cataloging those more thoroughly, would there be any objections?)

I've spent some time uploading the new card border artwork that Failbetter is using now and I changed the "three card" decoration snippet documentation, creating a macro in the process that is much simpler. I'm going through and cleaning them up as I find them but if you come across an oddly-formatted card decoration, that's what has happened.

I forget whether links work in the forum but, if they do, this should lead to the snippet documentation page.

Given that the warning on the home page was very old and the content in question still existed, I have endeavored over weeks to remove the offending content and fall back into line with FBG fan guidelines.

Since now that is complete, I have edited the front page warning to speak generally and added a section (from wiki editor to wiki editor) that I believe captures the spirit of what we should do with questionable posting of FBG content.

I will soon reach out to FBG for a (semi) official blessing to ensure the site remains in good faith with the developers.

Is it feasibly possible to get to 140 to make Uncanny Incunabulae?

So, lacking many goals in EB right now, I'm trying to set my sights on creating Uncanny Incunabula at Mutton Island. Unfortunately you need a Watchful of 140. The current cap is at 120. If I max out my Watchful with items, I have 135. I have an Exceptional Hat, but possibly upgrade to an Extraordinary Hat or Semiotic Monocle, either bringing my total to 136. I have Avid Gloves and could upgrade to Insatiable Gloves, giving me 138. I have Myriad Keys for a weapon (acquired through Ambition: Nemesis) but could upgrade to a Ratwork Watch, giving me 139. I have an Academic Gown and Mirror-Polished Shoes, and I do not know of anything that could replace them and increase Watchful more than they do. I have a Voluminous Library. Lastly, I have a Hound of Heaven for a pet and the only thing that gives a higher Watchful bonus is the Overgoat. The Overgoat. Is this a joke? Is there some other way to get to 140 without Fate? Is there a way with Fate?

Alright, it's a common sight on the wiki. Autofire cards seem to mess up the formatting of the card directly afterward. It can turn into a cascade of broken cards.

I have found the problem! Apparently, if the card's cell… The box around it… If it is not larger than the card image, that is what breaks things. Spacing out the elements fixes the problem entirely. I suspected this might be the problem when I noticed that simply clicking the link to expand the card fixed the formatting temporarily.

So now we know.

Grinding Whispered Secrets

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find it. I am wondering what is the most efficient storylet for grinding Whispered Secrets. Particularly because I need 80,000 of them to buy a lease to the Bazaar. (Do I really need one? Perhaps not. But it will fulfill my completist spirit.) Obviously, no matter where I go, it's going to take a really long time. The best options I know of are:

Unfinished Business in Ladybones Road, wherein you can get 100 Secrets for 1 Appalling one. This will take a total of 800 actions (16 days). The first drawback here is that I'd need 800 Appalling Secrets to reach the quantity I'm looking for (and I only have 100 at the moment). And the second is that once you run out of Appalling Secrets, you're finished.

The Empress' Court, wherein you can get:
[at Pers. 80] 83 Secrets, 3 change points of Society, and 2 of Fascinating
[at Pers. 100] 84 Secrets, 10 change points of Society
This will reach the destination after a little under 1000 actions (20 days). The drawback here is that I have to refrain from finishing my business in the Court — once I'm banished, these options are gone.

Are there any other satisfactory options you know of?

I learned something regarding paying the manager Brass for the Price of Desire step of Heart's Desire.

Either it was just changed, or attempting it enough times changes the outcome.

Compared to what I had seen previously (which matches the wiki), I got the following:

The strutting peacock falters 'You have noticed my buttons, then. How could you not?' The Manager struts up the street for a few paces, like a gilded peacock. 'They were made for me by... someone who was once very special to me.' The Manager's eyes darken, and for a moment he's just an ancient olive-skinned man in a ridiculous frock coat. He scurries back towards his Hotel, elbowing pedestrians out of his way and dropping most of the brass you gave him in his wake. What just happened? Well, however intriguing that was, it looks like you'll need to offer him something else to actually get what you need. You've lost 500 x Nevercold Brass Sliver (new total 5118). You've gained 1 x Inkling of Identity (new total 41).

I know it wasn't doing that when I first tried it (I've been occasionally dumping brass on him for a while now hoping that if you showered him with *enough* brass he might finally give in). The last paragraph and the Inkling weren't there when I started though — are they an addition or something that only shows when you've done it enough to be stupid?

So, the Places menu has been compressed in a way that people seem to tolerate. (I haven't received any boxes of flaming Starveling Cat poo yet, at least.)

Now I'm looking at the Stories menu and I'm not sure what to do. Part of why it is bothering me is that my characters are currently not in any of the stories currently in the list, thus defeating the purpose of the menu. And the Other Stories page isn't that well organized, either. It's marginally faster for me to use the Search function.

The dozens of stories in the game can't be classified easily. (Unlike, say, Ventures which are at least tied to a major Quality.) Or, at least I haven't found an easy way. Not that that's a bad thing — I like that little Stories pop up in unexpected places — but not having any easy taxonomy makes it difficult to come up with a reasonably efficient menu.

(The Story page needs to be alphabetized and cleaned up, at least, if no other way to organize it is found.)

Failbetter Games left a note in the page for Seeking Mr Eaten's Name. I wanted to capture it here in the Forum so others can see it. Arguably, that page in particular was what Failbetter Games was objecting to—wikis like this one are always skirting a fine line and, in their opinion, that page crossed it.

The note they left includes a link to this page on their blog that discusses what they consider a "content dump".

**Message from Failbetter Games -

Ladies and / or gentlemen

This page qualifies as a content dump. Could someone please limit or remove it as soon as possible? If in doubt, removal is safer.

This is how we define a content dump (from http://blog.failbettergames.com/page/Echo-Bazaar-fan-project-guidelines.aspx)

"We don't want our content reproduced in a way that allows people to read through it in a narratively coherent way, as if they were actually playing it in-game… without actually playing it in-game! We're OK with reference guides: we don't like substitutes for the game. Imagine if a Reader's Companion to Lord of the Rings just reproduced whole chapters, so you could read that chapter without buying the original book.

The difference between a content dump and a guide to a storyline is inevitably subjective in places. We're most bothered by dumps of key or secret plotlines, or widely publicised dumps. It is our decision in the end: this is our content that we've written over two years, and we ask you to respect that."

best

FBG**

I'm seeing old actions suddenly reappearing in the "classic" places (Watchmaker's Hill, Veilgarden, etc.) that I'm sure disappeared because my qualities got too high (I'm currently at 110 in everything, and I know Watchful cap is now 120.)

Is anyone else seeing this? For example, I've got "Provide training at the Department of Menace Eradication" in Watchmaker's Hill again.

I thought I would ask since I don't see anything specific on the BetterBlog and I can think of one thing I did that might have screwed things up on my system.

So, now that the Bazaar Sidestreets are live, and we need items to buy more items, I thought I'd get started on a project I've been wanting to start for some time. I'd like to make a page for each individual good, with a list of the storylets where you acquire it. Before, I'd search for the name of the good I wanted, and find storylets that way, but it would be wonderful to have an available list, sorted by difficulty.

The EBZ Wikispace has been working on this example, but they're not complete by any means. (example: http://echobazaar.wikispaces.com/Whispered+Secret)

Who's with me? :D

Had a question about making a new insert into the Forgotten Quarter page. It was listed as only unlocked with a London Street Sign and Watchful 50, while today I encountered an Opportunity Card that was unlocked with Watchful 40 that gave several options for unlocking the area. I made an entry in the Watchful Opportunity cards, but wanted to link to that entry from the actual Forgotten Quarter page (instead of taking up space with a whole entry in that page)

I know you can do this, I just don't know how. I am pretty awful and new at this stuff (and for that I apologize).

While I'm here, I also had a question about the way the Watchful (and dangerous etc) cards are compiled. They have really specific "Unlocked" groupings, which doesn't seem to match how the cards Unlock (which might be a recent change). It progresses 21 - 33 - 45 - 57 - 69 - 81, while I have encountered cards Unlocked basically on a 1-100 basis, and not on some odd progression. Like this card, which unlocked at 40. Could we change the grouping to 20-30-40-50-60 etc, unless there is something I am missing in the way they are arranged?

I'm relatively new, so I wanted to make sure, but it looks like there are many references on the wiki to Cryptic Secrets as an item, rather than Cryptic Clues, which is what I believe they are referring to.
Here are a few things that should be done with the top menu bar:

- 'Story'
This should be 'Stories', right? Plural?
'Menace', 'Progress' and 'Minor Qualities' shouldn't be here.
('Menace' and 'Progress' are included in 'Minor Qualities' and should be completely removed. 'Minor Qualities' is already under 'Qualities'.)

- 'Cards'
'Auto-fire Cards' should be 'Red Bordered Cards' since that's how they appear. (The fact that they auto-fire is on the page.)

I've noticed that there are various different styles being used to post actions, and no solid documentation on any sort of standards.

Most notably, there is a discontinuity in actions. I think there should be some page establishing a standard for added actions.

I believe the following is the current standard for a storylet?

[[f<image /art/small.png]] > +++ Example Storylet Title > **Unlocks: Example Storylet Minimum** > Example storylet description > ++++ Storylet action title > > **Unlocks: 200 Example Item** > Quality Challenge > Example action description > > [[div style="padding-left:2em"]] > [[collapsible show="Rewards spoiler" hide="Rewards spoiler"]] > ++++ Reward title > Reward description > > Rewards: > [[image /art/image.png]] Quality Increase > [[image /art/itemsmall.png]] 10x Item gained > [[/collapsible]] > [[/div]]

Though I have seen a lot of this variation on the spoiler:

> [[div style="padding-left:2em"]] > [[collapsible show="Rewards spoiler" hide="Rewards spoiler"]] > [[/div]] > ++++ Reward title > Reward description > > Rewards: > [[image /art/image.png]] Quality Increase > [[image /art/itemsmall.png]] 10x Item gained > [[/collapsible]]

The problem with that version of the code is that, at least in Firefox, the spoiler can be shown and hidden once and then is disabled entirely.

If this isn't something people think is important, that's fine with me, but I think it might help. And I know that even with a standard, it would take quite a bit of time to get everything already existing updated. At least we could do it for new things?

As you know, Alexis has asked the wiki to not put up paid for (fate) content. There is some of this here, but it's easy to fix.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be surround it all with

[!-- invisible comment goes here --]

With a line that says it currently requires fate. Then you could just remove the two ends. This works over multiple lines, so you could just comment out the entire page with that disclaimer at the top. Then when it goes public, all your hard work is still there.

We could also use this to have content created but in reserve for when it goes free. A page might look like this:

Page title... This content currently requires fate to access. [!-- All your content as many lines as it has images whatever --] -------------- Standard disclaimer goes here
