Embark on a Heist

The Flit gives you access to contacts, secret ways and thiefly chirp that would be the envy of any aspiring burglar. What daring robbery are you planning?
Unlocks: Shadowy 73

The House on Cubit Square

Mr Leadbeater is the junior partner in the firm of Stainrod & Leadbeater. But the firm has some of the most lucrative shipbuilding contracts in the Neath. The chirp is that he likes to count his profits at home. This is a relatively straightforward heist, likely to garner you a pile of glim.
Unlocks: Shadowy 80

The offices of Baseborn & Fowlingpiece

Lawyers hoard secrets as a sorrow-spider hoards eyes. And lawyers are arguably more dangerous. You do like a challenge. This is a slightly harder heist, likely to garner you Touching Love Stories or, if you do especially well, Bazaar Permits.

Begin the Heist

When you have enough Casing, you can begin your Heist. Increase your Casing further if you want to buy Inside Information and Escape Routes.
Unlocks: Planning a Heist The House on Cubit Square, where Mr Leadbeater counts his shipbuilder's Echoes.

Purchase Escape Routes

10 points of Casing will buy you an Escape Route: an easy way out if things start to go badly.
Unlocks: Shadowy 80, Casing… 5

Begin the job

Check your pockets. Make sure your boots aren't squeaking. And in you go.
This will take you to another place. Take care of other business first. It will also use up any remaining Casing. Be sure you've spent all you want to spend.
Unlocks: Casing… 5

Purchase Inside Information

5 points of Casing will buy you a piece of Inside Information, which will help get you out of difficult situations during your heist.
Unlocks: Shadowy 90, Casing… 5

Purchase a copy of an Intriguing Key

Devious means may gain you a copy of one of the household keys. You may never need to pass through the door that uses it, of course.

A Burly Night-Watchman

A burly man with a lantern, a broken nose and a substantial stick. It would be noisy and painful to tangle with this brute. But how to get past?

Go through

Needs must. Let's get this over with quickly.

…go back

You'll have to find another way. But it'll be a long way round.

Wait a few minutes

If this is Surly Peter, his particular personal complaint will - with luck - send him off to relieve the pressure very shortly.
Unlocks: 1 x Inside Information

Get out of my way

Whisper your name, so that it drifts menacingly down the corridor.

writer.png

A Clean Well-Lighted Place

You stop abruptly - you've stepped into a study. A pool of greenish lamplight falls across the desk where an elderly woman scratches with a quill. She hasn't noticed you yet.

Wait

…until she's taken by one of her sneezing fits. The under-butler mentioned this woman always has that problem when she does the accounts.
[Unlocked with Inside Information 1]

Snaffle documents

Those papers at the side of the desk look intriguing. You might be able to reach them without her noticing…
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Pass through the study

A little chancy, but she seems engrossed.
A matter of luck: a sure thing. Or is it?

toysoldier.png

A clutter of bric-a-brac

A collection of bird's eggs. A teapot painted with chubby children picking flowers. Something leathery under a glass dome. People do collect all kinds of rubbish.

Poke through the possibilities

There might be something in here worth something. To someone. Somewhere.
A matter of luck: pretty good odds.

Play it safe

Ignore the possibility of profit, and the risk of knocking something over.

orphanagecorridors.png

A Moment of Safety

A broom-closet. The best refuge of the harassed burglar.

Hide for a little while

Wait as long as you dare. This will restore a point of With Cat-Like Tread, but not above 3.

The door in the wall!

What's this, at the back of the broom closet? A hidden catch? This will set With Cat-Like Tread to 4

A Promising Door

Hello, door. You have a lootsome look about you.

Chance it

Nothing is visible through the keyhole. And the door's too heavy to move in total silence.
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Forward planning

Yes, this will take you through the Gallery and a step closer to your goal.

A Sheer Climb

Your opportunity to escape - or ascend a floor.

Escape!

You've grown too nervous. The night is ill-omened. This will end your burglary early and return you to London!

An uncertain path

You could climb. But is there a way up?
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Foresight

You scouted out this path from outside. There is a way up…

blackcat.png

A Talkative Cat

A smug-looking black cat perches atop a bookshelf. 'Ooh, a burglar. Hello, burglar. What shall we do with you?'

Grab the beast

"I think you should… hold still!"
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Bribe it with secrets

"I think you should listen to what I have to say."
Unlocks: Appalling Secret x 10

Trade on your connections

"I think you should give my regards to the Duchess."
Unlocks: Connected: the Duchess 20

A Troublesome Lock

It's a beast, this lock. Devil-forged steel and the hallmark of a master-ratsmith. But there's probably something interesting on the other side.

There may be an easier way

If you remember correctly…
Unlocks: Inside Information 1

Try your luck

See if you can betty the lock.
A matter of luck: the odds are against you here.

Use your Kifers

These will help.

An Alarming Bust

A staring-eyed face looms out of the darkness! Its mouth gapes like a wound!

Aaagh!

Leap aside!
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Oh, it's just that bloody bust of the Consort

You knew there was one in here somewhere.

spider.png

Look up…

There. Clinging to the ceiling like swollen fruit. Six, seven, eight of them. One holds an eye: you might imagine it's watching you. Perhaps they're wild, perhaps trained to guard. It hardly matters.

Move slowly past

Don't alarm them. Perhaps they're not hungry.
A matter of luck: the odds are against you here.

Dash past

If you run, someone will almost certainly hear you. But perhaps you won't end up with your hair full of eye-stealing spiders.
A matter of luck: pretty good odds.

dog.png

Sleeping Dogs

A pair of hunting hounds big as marsh-wolves lie curled in sleep, ears twitching.

Creep past

However stealthy you are, their noses are keen. But you might make it.
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Dash past

You can very likely make it past. But you'll certainly wake them.
A matter of luck: pretty good odds.

ratthief.png

Tiny Rivals

A gang of humped shapes, led by a taller rat with a feathered hat, hauls a wagon full of sugar across the corridor. Sugar and sapphires, actually.

"Well-met, thieflings!"

Perhaps you can share intelligence?
A matter of luck: pretty good odds.

Hang back

"Never talk to a rat wot you ain't been introduced to. Or eat beef wot a raven won't touch." The second part certainly turned out true. Perhaps you should trust Blue Jack's advice.

Sapphires?

Wasted on rats. You reach for a suitable weapon. Volume IV of Gibbons' 'Decline and Fall…' will make an impact. It'll be noisy, of course.

Through The Shadows

Work is completed by day. Dark-work is by its nature not work but crime. - the Red Book of the Presbyterate

And here you are hard at work

One cannot choose one's trade. Well one can, one has, but now one's busy burgling, thank you.

Work wisely, not hard

You've learnt a quicker way.

Through Deeper Shadows

When we leave the light, we encounter the darkness. When we leave the darkness, we do not always encounter light. - the Red Book of the Presbyterate

Leaving the light

This place has old and unsuspected corners. Ways under the earth. Libraries of broken books. Rooms long locked for sound and proper reasons.
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

These ways are strange

You needed discipline to learn this little labyrinth.

Winding Stairs

A tiny staircase that you almost over-looked. Where does it go?

Upstairs. That's probably right.

'Downstairs for the crushers, upstairs for the push, and the roof for the windering,' as the proverb has it. But it might be a dead end.
A matter of luck: pretty good odds.

Play it safe

Pass on. Take the route you originally planned.

Unlocks: The Burglar's Progress 5

…a Sealed Archive

This door has been locked and the edges caulked with black wax. That's interesting.

…Mr Baseborn's Papers

Baseborn's desk is vast - more monument than furniture. A ship's mast's worth of timber. But it's almost lost beneath a snowdrift of papers. Snatch what you can and get out quick.

Perhaps you didn't arrange a way out. Perhaps something went wrong. Perhaps you'll find a way out anyway. This will end the job early, saving you from arrest and sending you back to the Flit.
