Cave of the Nadir

Place of irrigo-protected mystery

The Cave of the Nadir are accessed via the Forgotten Quarter archaeology stories. This area is considered outside of London for purposes of interactions and access to things like the Bazaar and item conversions. There are only a couple of storylets that appear once you enter, notably to allow you to leave. Most of the interactions are with Opportuinty Cards. You will build up irrigo by staying here, and the more you have when you leave, the more it will affect you.

In the Nadir

This then is the Cave of the Nadir: aswim with auroral light, filled with a deep silence that makes the Forgotten Quarter seem like Spite on market-day. The irrigo around you makes it difficult to judge distances, but it's big: a cathedral's extent at least before the distances are lost in violet fog. It must extend far under the Quarter. There are signs of habitation. And here and there, figures dart into the shadows as you look.

Try to make sense of what you're seeing

You can't be sure if you're awake or not. It may not even be possible to enter the Nadir in a waking state…
(watchful challenge, straightforward at 142)

Leave the Cave of the Nadir

The longer you remain here, the fewer memories you have: though you never notice them going. It's like looking round a room, and finding it suddenly empty of furniture, though you heard no-one enter or leave.
Leave the Cave of the Nadir at any time before your Irrigo quality rises too high. The higher it is, the more of your primary qualities you'll lose. 6 is high. 10 will really hurt you.

Return to the Forgotten Quarter, where the air is old and cold, but clear of this deadly colour.

An Altarful of Strangers [Standard]

The lost ones of the Nadir gather by a stone altar. A man snuffling behind a velvet mask, two urchins scuffling half-heartedly, a Rubbery scratching something into the rock. Their eye-sockets have half-healed, giving them an unborn look: except for the Rubbery, whose tentacles have withdrawn almost into his spongy skull. They turn to look at you, with the hesitation that affects everyone in this place.

Speak to the Rubbery Man

What's he scratching on the floor?

Speak to the Firebrand [Standard]

His eyes are shining. In this light, he is impossibly handsome: sculpted, not grown, like one of the monuments above woken to life by the impossible light.

"Is this what you hoped for?"

…or not?

"Stay with me."

Hold out your hand.

Speak to the Missonary [Standard]

Her creamy skin is overlaid with irrigo light, so that she looks like a figure carved from amethyst: the blue of her eyes has become an impossible colour, like a refraction of midnight. She bites her lip.

"Is this what you hoped for?"

…or not?

"Stay with me."

Reach out your hand.

Rebels who will not rise

The revolutionaries of the Third City sleep here, fifty-five of them. They would have made their republics in the tomb-colonies. It was not permitted. Their enemies must have hated them, to lay them here to rest where they would never be remembered.
