Free Lodgings
These are mean, inexpensive lodgings that you can either find yourself in or manage to talk your way into. They provide little benefits and are (hopefully) a stepping stone to greater things in Fallen London.
New Newgate Prison Cell
A miserable dripstone cell with a barred window and a straw mattress; and a magnificent view of the lights of the Bazaar reflected in the dark waters of the Unterzee.
Allows only 1 opportunity card in your hand.
(You begin the game here and have very few options but to escape and find better lodgings.)
An Abandoned Family Crypt
Sanctuary of a sort, and its occupants were stolen or eaten long ago, so there's plenty of room. But it's cold, depressing, illegal and dangerous. Find somewhere better!
Allows only 1 opportunity card in your hand.
(Not much better than the New Newgate Prison Cell. But, it's better than the Prison Cell. This is your Lodgings once you first escape New Newgate.)
An Attic Room
A cramped and draughty room on the top floor of a lodging-house.
Allows 2 opportunity cards in your hand.
Costs 50 x Whispered Secret
(This is one of the earliest lodgings available to you as a newcomer to Fallen London.)
A Spare Bedroom
The guest-room of a soft-hearted widow. Three hot meals a day and a real feather-bed go some way towards compensating for the weekly, and noisy, hymn-singing sessions in her parlour.
Allows 2 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +1 defence bonus.
Persuasive challenge (against the soft-hearted widow)
(This is one of the earliest lodgings available to you as a newcomer to Fallen London.)
Lodgings Available for Purchase
Through Penstock's Land Agents, in the Bazaar, you can purchase a better address. With better lodgings, not only are you able to hold more Opportunity Cards in your hand, more opportunities become available to you. These lodgings also offer defensive bonuses in the game of Knife and Candle.
Until 12/13/2013, one purchased a key, etc., to one of the purchasable lodgings through one of the storylets on an Opportunity Card associated with each kind of lodging. Those storylets have been removed and one now purchases access to the several Lodgings from Penstock's Land Agents in the Bazaar.
Smoky Flophouse
Let's see - fleas, noise, smoke, Rubbery Men squealing as they're dragged out back and murdered. But you meet the most fascinating people.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +2 (minor) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Tower of Knives card.
Costs 200 x Rostygold
Rooms above a bookshop
Let's see - rooms on three levels above a winding, dusty stair. The owner is melancholy and given to buttonholing you at the door and weeping into your hat. But he does have some interesting customers.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +3 (significant) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Tower of Sleeping Giants card.
Costs 450 x Whispered Secret
Rooftop Shack
Let's see - draughty and unstable. Good thing there's not much wind in the Neath. But the views are magnificent!
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +3 (significant) defence bonus.
Unlocks the High Castle card.
Costs 150 x Primordial Shriek
Rooms in a Half-Abandoned Mansion
Mr Iron invites all of Officer rank and above to stay in this property free of charge. He suggests you bring your own candles. If you enjoy rats, murderers and gloomy grandeur, this is the place for you.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +3 (significant) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Listing Tower card.
Requires Rank 14 in Knife and Candle
Lair in the Marshes
Let's see - if you like seclusion, fungus and mud, this is the place for you. If you're some sort of mycophilic hermit, perhaps. You see strange things out here.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +2 (minor) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Heron Tower card.
Costs 300 x Rat on a String
Cottage by the Observatory
Let's see - the blind men at the Observatory rent these out, to people who don't mind occasionally being assaulted by predatory fungus in the middle of the night.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +2 (minor) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Sleepless Tower card.
Costs 400 x Jade Fragment
Rooms above a Gambling Den
Let's see - noisy when it's open. Noisier when someone forgets to bribe the Constables and they stage a raid. But the conversation's good.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +3 (significant) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Tower of Sparrows card.
Costs 420 x Deep Amber
Decommissioned Steamer
Let's see - not a safe place, down by the Unterzee shore. Nor warm. But it's quiet, and offers good opportunities for beachcombing.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +4 (major) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Windward Tower card.
Costs 800 x Glim
Handsome Townhouse
Let's see - graceful, well-appointed, with a respectable address and a number of wide, airy rooms. 'Airy' if they weren't a mile underground, anyhow.
Allows 3 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +4 (major) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Tower of Eyes card.
Costs 500 x Romantic Notion
Reservation at the Royal Bethlehem
Let's see - there's nowhere like the Royal Bethlehem Hotel. Its luxury is unparalleled: its guests, beyond baroque. Lock your door, or you don't know who you might wake up in bed with.
Allows 4 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +5 (exceptional) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Tower of Sun and Moon card.
Costs 40000 x Drop of Prisoner's Honey
Premises at the Bazaar
Let's see - a shop front and a handsome set of rooms above it, on a street where they sell brass lanterns, blood-apples and some sort of evil snail thing that cures gout.
Allows 4 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +5 (exceptional) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Lofty Tower card.
Costs 80000 x Whispered Secret
Guest room at the Brass Embassy
Let's see - the luxury is sinful. The staff are always polite. Warm? I'll say it's warm. Good cigars, urbane conversation, and just the slightest possibility of accidental damnation.
Allows 4 opportunity cards in your hand. Gives a +5 (exceptional) defence bonus.
Unlocks the Western Tower card.
Costs 1000 x Brilliant Soul
